Organic Ylang-Ylang Essential Oil

Ylang-Ylang (Canananga odorata extra)
0.33 fl.oz - 10 ml
Ylang ylang - Calming, euphoric, reputedly
aphrodisiac, sedative / exotic, sweet, rich, slightly spicy
Name: Ylang ylang, Canananga odorata extra
Supremely exotic, reminiscent of the luxurious laziness of tropical islands with
the power to awaken your sensuality
Essential information: This delectably hypnotic scent has the power to
awaken our masculine and feminine sides, create erotic moods, enhance
relationships and activate feelings of enthusiasm, joy and peacefulness. An
exceedingly valuable oil for skin and hair care, it can help with reproductive
concerns and relax over-active body systems.
Description of aroma:: Very sweet, soft and flowery, yet radiantly exotic
with a definite lascivious quality, this voluptuous perfume conjures images of
orchids, almonds and jasmine.
Properties beneficial to the mind, emotions and spirit: Ylang ylang has
long been renowned for creating euphoric and erotic moods, and has quite a
reputation as an aphrodisiac. Its aromatic influences are sexual energy and
enhancing relationships, and this, along with its soothing, calming action, may
be helpful for impotence and frigidity. It is also said to activate enthusiasm.
This oil can help reconcile feelings of frustration, anxiety, rage, anger, fear,
panic and shock, and replace them with peacefulness, joy, inner trust and
sensuality. It relaxes the body while raising the spirits, especially helpful
with nervous depression accompanied by severe tension, and also low
self-confidence. It can both relax and stimulate the brain waves, depending on
your individual needs, and may be useful for nervous and tension headaches.
Relaxing and strengthening to the inner being, ylang ylang may be able to bring
out a man's feminine side, awakening his intuition and understanding. Its
sedative qualities can benefit excitable conditions, as it regulates adrenaline
flow and relaxes the nervous system, which may also help if you suffer from
insomnia.
Of interest: Native to Indonesia and the Philippines, the ylang ylang
tree belongs to the same family as the custard apple, and requires a great deal
of attention. Ylang ylang means 'flower of the flowers' in the Malayan language,
and the exquisitely fragrant, large tongue-shaped flowers are a traditional
adornment in the Far East. They are strewn on the marriage beds of newly wed
couples - probably due to the aphrodisiac properties for which their perfume is
renowned. Ylang ylang was an ingredient in the famous 19th century hair product,
Macassar hair oil. It became so popular that Victorian housewives had to protect
their chair backs against oily stains, hence anti-macassars, or chair covers.
Ylang ylang flowers can be pink, mauve and yellow, the latter of which produce
the finest oil. Blossoms are harvested and immediately prepared in the early
hours of the morning. Distillation of the blooms is a delicate process which
lasts for days. Approximately 100lb of blossoms yields between 1 and 2lb of
essential oil.
The distillation process yields several qualities of oil, from extra superior to
5th grade. The oil is distilled in 'fractions', meaning the process is stopped
at various stages and the oil produced so far is removed. The grading methods
vary; in one instance there are YY super, YY extra, YY 1, 2 and 3, while in
another there are YY complete, YY extra, YY1, YY2 and YY3.
These grades can overlap because each distiller makes their own determination of
the dividing line. YY complete may be a full, uninterrupted distillation, or a
blend of fractions. Therefore the oil can vary considerably, especially when
climactic and botanical factors are also taken into consideration.
Ylang ylang should not be confused with 'cananga oil', which is considered an
inferior product from the end part of the distillation process. The properties
are basically the same, but the perfume of cananga is less refined.
In their native country the blossoms were immersed in coconut oil until all the
fragrance was absorbed. The resulting remedy was used to treat diseases, fevers
and to fight malaria. Up until 1990 the Philippines had the world trade monopoly
on ylang ylang. Their oil was considered to be the finest produced, but
apparently it is no longer available.
Sometimes referred to as the poor man's jasmine, the soft floral scent is often
used as an alternative to the sweet and more feminine rose in men's fragrances.
It is a particularly good fixative for perfumes, as well as a beautiful scent,
and is a popular ingredient in cosmetics, bath products, massage oils and skin
and hair care products - women in the Philippines apply the oil directly to
their hair. Ylang ylang is even used to flavour desserts and beverages.
Properties beneficial to the physical body: Don't be deceived by this
exotically floral essence. Ylang ylang means business and is a potent oil in
reducing an excessively rapid heart beat or overly fast breathing. It relaxes
the nervous system, lowers high blood pressure and stimulates the brain to
release endorphins, which reduce pain.
This oil is reputed to balance hormones, which make it valuable for reproductive
concerns, and also PMT, especially when combined with clary sage or neroli. Its
antiseptic properties are beneficial when treating intestinal infections or
insect bites.
A particularly valuable skin and hair care oil, ylang ylang balances the
secretion of sebum, relaxes facial muscles, sooths, softens, and rejuvenates -
due to plant hormones present - and so can be used for all skin types,
especially oily, combination, aging and stressed. It is reputed to firm breast
tissue.
This oil apparently stimulates the scalp and encourages hair growth, promoting
strong healthy hair. It can also protect your hair when swimming in salt water.
Scentsual blending suggestions: Ylang ylang possesses extraordinary
staying power, and the scent of oils that normally evaporate quickly will last
longer when mixed with it. Numerous oils blend perfectly with this sumptuous
oil, including lemon, sandalwood, lavender.
Alternative suggestions for use: Add a few drops to your shampoo and
conditioner for luxuriant hair care. Ylang ylang is perfect for an evening bath,
to release daily tension and restore calm and balance.
If you find it too sweet, blend with orange, lemon or bergamot.
Essential safety precautions: Considered a relatively safe oil, ylang
ylang may irritate sensitive skins, so do not use on inflamed skin conditions or
dermatitis. In concentration the aroma can be overpowering for long periods, and
may cause nausea or headaches. Avoid use with low blood pressure. Excessive,
prolonged use may over-stimulate the nervous system.
